how to integrate bbPress forums into a Wordpress blog to build community around videos.

How to Help This Project:

  1. if you're a video creator, then make a kick-ass looking videoblog so we can inspire others. We are building the WP themes and plugins you might need. We need your feedback and comments too.
  2. if you're a developer or PHP hacker, we need help with our different plugins. Our current folks are great but busy as we all are. Distributing the work is the key. Usually, it's just small tweaks.
  3. if you're a CSS designer, we need help creating unique WP themes that highlight video on the blog page. Videobloggers want to harness the blog different from text bloggers. This is pioneering work.
  4. if you like documentation then help us make video tutorials of the different features/hacks. Anything you think is important to share as you build you're own site, make little blog post about. We love video, but text explanation are great as well. we are making a list of resources so new folks can get up to speed.

Identity Graphics:

  • The font for the main headline is Santa Fe LET Fonts. There's a copy on the root level of the website server. (FTP to get it).
  • A Photoshop file made from the website header is there too (in layers) if you want to use it to make images.

Linux and Ogg Support:

We are looking at supporting and promoting the use of the Ogg codec for video. And possibly finding and promoting a Linux video editor.

What exists and what needs to exist

Ogg: a free video codec that the community can further developer

Linux editors: what video editors are actualy usable on Linux? which ones have active developers who want our feedback?

Plugins:

Video Wrangler:

VideoPress:

Pledge Drive:

Visual Gallery stuff:

Dave Meade plugin

Sull experiment

Recent videos widget:

Sull made this example with javascript

Other plugins we want to include:

Third-Party Stuff:Other Wordpress Plug-Ins

Simple Forum (installed on Semanal.org)

Comment Luv: when someone comments, it links to the person's lastest blog post. wonder if it could also bring in a thumbnail if it was a video?

Random Feature requests:

  • can i have a forum, or some way for my viewers to discuss issues around my work (see http://mix.jetsetshow.com/ or http://www.brotherhood2.com/mypants/) I know these are forums...but can we add this as a plugin somehow? the idea is to let people download a folder of stuff from us...and just turn it all on. [on 11/22/07 Cheryl adds: given our new philosophy, let's not put it in a folder of stuff from us. Let's point people to it as an option and if one of us learns it well enough we can make a tutorial. Until then, Devlounge has instructions on how to install and customize bbPress to integrate your recent blog content. Forum add-on for WordPress download here > http://bbpress.org/
  • Can we resize the thumbnail on posts independent of what the actual post thumbnail is?
  • should we encouarge people to have a MIRO buton is their subscribe page? (Jay)
  • could we make a plugin that allowed people to upload to blip through the WP admin. Here is the blip API. (Jay)
  • 'Your own blip": you'd have a nice GUI for your S3 account that let you upload a video....which would be automatically transcoded to whatever format you want....and then would automatically post to your blog using vPIP. maybe it could even cross-post to the Archive for long term storage. (jay)

Research

Resources:

  • Vlogsplosion Theme
  • How to Write a WordPress Plugin (not specific to Show-In-A-Box, but a great resource)
  • WordPress Plugin Generator (again not specific to SIAB, but maybe helpful - "This tool will help you create a template for your own Wordpress plugin. It will provide sample code for the insertion of HTML in your blog, and the configuration page in the admin interface.")

Roadmap

A Roadmap is a high level overview for where Show in a Box is going from a development point of view.

Since this is a volunteer based project, it is hard to give hard forcasts for when things will get done. (They tend to get done as the people involved with Show in a Box get time) But this page tries to give a forcast of what is coming within the next 4 to 6 months.

SEO:

How do we make sure our blogs are being picked up by search engines?

  1. Make sure your URL's are human readable...most likely your blog post name. (example: http://ryanishungry.com/2007/09/02/burning-man-some-of-the-cool-stuff-we-saw/)
  2. Add plenty of relevant text to each video post to give the viewer perspective on the video and give the search engines words to search for. Also, include appropriate links. Giving other blogs/sites links...gets you link backs. Search engines love linking.
  3. Put alt-tags in your picture links...as well as naming your photos with descriptive words.
  4. Add plenty of info in your
  5. Use descriptive blog titles. Avoid simply being "clever".
  6. Use technorati tags for each post
  7. use this plugin: http://www.arnebrachhold.de/2005/06/05/google-sitemaps-generator-v2-final
  8. Cheryl's blog post on SEO Tips from BlogHer07 explains some of the above in more detail and provides even more suggestions.
